Modernism in Rotterdam
Rotterdam has always been a city on the move! Take a tour with one of our experienced architecture guides and cycle along the highlights of Dutch functionalism. You will start with a tour through the symbol of post war architecture in Rotterdam, the Wholesalebuilding -Het Groothandelsgebouw-, with its 125.000 m2 of office space still the biggest office building in the Netherlands. You will than cross the Erasmusbridge to go to one of the most interesting social housing estates from the nineteentwenties, the Kiefhoek. And yes your guide will also take you to visit Museumhouse Sonneveld, a white villa from 1933, with its complete in and exterior designed by Brinkman & van der Vlugt, giving the whole house the feel and air of nineteen thirties modernism. You will end the tour with a visit to one of the most remarkable examples of Dutch functionalism, the Van Nelle factory, with the concept of light, air and space pervading the entire complex.
Along the way you will stop for a lunch at Café Rotterdam, situated in the Cruiseterminal of the Holland America Line.
